Many people outside Bengal are unaware of the extent of Rabindranath Tagore’s writings for children. In more than thirty volumes of his writings there is enough material for at least two volumes for children. These include the entire range of human experience: the comic, the world of child’s imagination, the philosophic, tragic and even at times the grim and horrific. This book presents samples from most types of Tagore’s writings for children short stories, humorous skits and poems, including those on the deeds and spirits of the Sikhs and the Rajputs, celebrated as models of valour and honour. Tagore gave much credit to children’s ability to understand and did not want to confine them to the narrow limits of fairy tales and legends. This book is published in the same spirit. Let the imagination of the young readers take them wherever they may without any preconceived notion.
