The term ‘tribe’ denotes a group of people living in primitive or barbarous conditions. It is a social group with territorial affiliation, endogamous with no specialization of functions. They have a headman or a chief who controls the activities of that group. Tribals constitute around 8.08% of the total Indian population, and of the total tribal population around 80% are found in central India. Efforts made from the beginning of the planned plans, policies, special strategies and programmes, have registered a definite quantifiable improvement in the socio-economic status of the tribals. However, the progress made by them could not bring them anywhere nearer to the mainstream society as the gap in their socio-economic status continued to prevail. The present book deals with the racial identity and human rights issues of tribals. It discusses a number of burning issues faced by tribes. It outlines the complexity which surrounds the socio-cultural factors, and attitudes affecting the status of tribals in society. It also discusses the national and international efforts for the upliftment of tribals. The contents of the book will be immensely useful to academics, researchers, administrators and policy-makers and all those interested in the development of tribals.
