Non-alignment was an ideological and (foreign) policy response to the bi-polar rivalry of the two superpowers-US and the erstwhile USSAR-in the Cold War period. However, with the end of the Cold War and disintegration of the former Soviet Union, the bipolar world order changed to a new international order characterized by the political and military hegemony of the US and emergence of number of great economic powers. Non-alignment lost many of its traditional roles, functions and ideological position in the changed context. This book essentially addresses concerns of those who raise questions about the validity of non-alignment after the end of the Cold War. But more importantly, it attempts to define new roles of non-alignment movement in the changed world order and pleads for political reconsolidation of the Third world countries to promote their collective economic, political and strategic interests.
