The book contains 20 essays written by distinguished law-enforcement officers regarding some of their challenging and unique experiences in the field and their underlying lessons and warnings. The bunch of essays also provides revealing insights into the ambience in which the police work in India and the problems challenges, conflicting pulls and pressures that buffet conscientious officers in the field. Their triumphs and tragedies, agonies and ecstasies are woven in the pages of the book. There is also the message that in police work courage, honour, fair play and unwavering commitment to right means always help officers weather storms. Professional success comes by treading a narrow straight path and not by taking recourse to shortcut questionable means.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR Sankar Sen
Sankar Sen, former Director General, national Human Rights Commission, New Delhi and former Director of the National Police Academy, Hyderabad, joined the Indian Police Service in 1960. He graduated from Presidency College, Calcutta, and obtained master's degree in History from Calcutta University and LLB from Utkal University. He was allotted to Orissa cadre and held a number of posts with distinction. He joined the Border Security Force as the Inspector general in 1987 and was later on promoted as the Additional Director general. Thereafter, he was posted as the Director of the SVP national Police Academy (NPA), the premier institution for training of senior police officers in the country. He was awarded the Police medal for meritorious service in 1979 and President's Police medal for distinguished service in 1986. On completion of his assignment in the NPA, he joined as the director general of the National Human Rights Commission and later on functioned as the Special Reporter, in charge of custodial justice programmes of the NHRC. He has to his credit many books. Including Police Today and Human Rights in a developing Society; Tryst with law Enforcement and Human Rights; Law Enforcement and Cross Border terrorism; Human Rights and Law Enforcement, etc. At present, he is a Senior fellow in the Institute of Social Sciences, New Delhi.
