Region and Partition is a book which, for the first time, brings a comparative perspective to the two Muslim majority areas of the subcontinent most affected by the turmoil which followed the British decision to divide and quit in 1947. This collection of papers, most of which were presented at the Fourteenth European Conference of Modern South Asian Studies at Copenhagen University in 1996, provide important new insights into both the mechanisms of boundary drawing and the consequences for the millions of ordinary people caught up in the massacres and migrations. The volume contributes significantly to current historical interest in bringing both a regional dimension to the history of the subcontinent and to the attempt to understand the partition experience ‘from beneath’.
