The United Nations estimates that 10 percent of world population in underdeveloped countries faces the problem of disability of one or the other type. Considering the size of population with disabilities, it is necessary to have proper rehabilitation strategies. In the absence of proper rehabilitation strategies persons with disabilities become a burden on their families, society and nations as a whole. Carefully designed and implemented rehabilitation strategies help in converting this army of persons with disabilities from unproductive burden to productive manpower and equal partner in social and economic development. Strategies for the rehabilitation of persons with disabilities followed in different countries differ widely depending on the level of social and economic development. In designing country-specific rehabilitation strategy, knowledge of rehabilitation practices followed in different countries and the best practices world over is of significant importance. The main objective of this book is to highlight various approaches for the rehabilitation of persons with disabilities and experiences of different countries in terms of process of rehabilitation followed by them. This cross country experiences help in designing better rehabilitation strategies for specific country. It is hoped that the book will be of great help to Government departments, non- government organizations, policymakers, planners, researchers, social scientists and developmental and social organizations active in the areas of rehabilitation of persons with disabilities.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR D. Kishorekumar Bhanushali

Kishor Bhanushali holds Ph.D degree in Economics from Gujarat University, Ahmedabad. He is an M.A in Economics from M. S. University of Baroda. He has also cleared National Eligibility Test conducted by University Grant Commission. He holds Diploma in Financial Management from Principal L N Welingkar Institute of Management Development and Research, Matunga, Mumbai. He has around 8 years’ experiences in corporate, academic, and research. He is currently working as Faculty, Economics with Icfai Business School, Ahmedabad. He has presented more than 14 papers in various national and international conferences/seminars and has 13 published papers in various journals and magazines. His areas of interest include disability and rehabilitation, labour and employment, informal and unorganized sector, and gender empowerment.
