ABOUT THE AUTHOR Mahmood bin Muhammad
Mahmood Bin Muhammad, a writer and poet of distinction, has gained nation-wise recognition as a leading police theoretical and has the rare distinction of having served as Ambassador of India to Saudi Arabia, after distinguishing himself in the Indian Police Service (Andhra Pradesh Cadre). He is now a Trustee of H.E.H. the Nizam’s Charitable Trust, Hyderabad, and is actively associated with several other educational and charitable trusts and organizations. Educated in Madras University from which he received his M.A. and B.L. degrees, Mr. Mahmood, after a stint as Munsif-Magistrate and Lecturer in English, entered the Indian Police Service and rose to occupy high positions at the state, national and international levels. He headed the Hyderabad City Crime Branch and the State C.I.D., the State Police Training College and the S.V.P. National Police Academy, the State Prisons Department and Directorate of Correctional Services. He served as the first Deputy Director (Research), Bureau of Police Research and Development, Ministry of Home affairs, Government of India and as Additional Home secretary in the State of Andhra Pradesh. He was the recipient of President’s Police Medals for Meritorious and Distinguished Services and served as Member of the working Group of Planning Commission on social Defence and as National Correspondent with United Nations Secretariat in the field of Prevention of Crime and Treatment of Offenders. He was also bome on the United Nations roster of experts in the field of crime prevention. He has published several papers/research reports in national/international journals and served as Editor of Indian Police Journal, the journal of Police Research and Development and the S.V.P. National Police Academy magazine. He has participated in several national and international seminars and conferences on crime prevention and development administration. Among his other publications are three books titled a New Image for the Police, A Policeman Ponders, The Fundamentals of Fundamentalism, besides a booklet of poems titled fantasia.
