The importance of the increasing role of renewable energy sources in the overall energy scenario in India was recognized in the early 1970s. Today India has among the world’s largest programme for deployment of renewable energy products and systems. As pointed out by the Former President of India Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalams Independence Day address August 14, 2005 the strategic goals for energy Independence by 2030 would thus call for a shift in the structure of energy sources. Firstly fossil fuel imports need to be minimized and secure access to be ensured. The most significant aspect however would be that the power generated through renewable energy technologies may target 20 to 25% against the present 5%. Other dimension of Energy Security for a nation is its conservation. Energy conservation should be considered in any comprehensive land use planning process. Homes and businesses use a variety of energy sources for heating like fuel oil gas wood electricity etc. Substantial economic savings can be realized through energy conservation.
