The semantic content of an art like music (sruti and layam) is multidimensional. Totality of perceptions (perhaps infinite) can actualise all the meaningful possibility implicit in a branch like ‘Layam’. ‘Layam’ in this context is treated as a sub-discipline of concert-music, devotional music, (congregations like bajans) drama and dance. The aim of the study is to clarify certain parameters of the art of percussion. Percussion-art had cultivated aesthetic principles which achieve fullness through correlation with other sub-divisions of the art of music.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR T.K. Venkata Subramanian

Dr. T.K. Venkatasubramanian is a member of the staff of the Department of History (Reader) of the Delhi University. Till recently he was Joint Secretary, Indian History Congress. Currently he is the Joint Secretary of the Indian Music Congress. An acclaimed Mrdangam artiste, he is well acquainted with the theoretical norms of the art. He has authored many books on the History and Culture of Tamilnadu. His contribution includes many research papers in journals of repute.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR T.V. Kuppuswami

Prof. T.V. Kuppuswami is well-known in the schools of scholastic studies and research. He learnt classical Carnatic music from famous Vidwans and had extensively read the treatises on music. He is a performing artiste and music is a way of life in his family. His children are all well trained in music and his wife is a Veena artiste. He had and has the privilege of being in intimate touch with doyens of the field of Carnatic music. A post-graduate in History, Economics and Politics of the Madras University, he earned the Doctorate degree of the University of Kerala by research. He had served the field of higher education for over thirty years guiding students to earn their Doctoral titles. He has authored many books and scholarly papers. He is currently a member of the advisory committee of the Indian Music Congress. In an honorary capacity, he serves as a member of the Board of Research Studies in Music of the Delhi University.
