The volume covers the importance of hinterland trade centres and large and busy urban settlements in the trade between regions in ancient times with specific reference to Arikamedu as an Indo-Roman trading station. It examines how Arikamedu was related to inland settlements and aspects such as its political and economic organisation, its relationship with the satellite settlements, the transformation of the settlement over time and nature of early historic trade. It thus showcases the contribution of the settlement and its satellites to economic development of Iron Age society in South India and throws light on the origin, development and extension of ancient ports and trade mechanisms. It takes up evolution of urbanism in South India concentrating on the interaction between metropolitan centres and hinterland settlement that served as resource bases, productive units and trading links. It features some 50-60 satellite settlements around Arikamedu, covering aspects of their importance in trade.
