Freed with the stiff competition offered by multinational manufacturing companies, small and medium scale industrial units have been passing through a critical phase, fighting a losing battle for survival. The present book is a systematic study of the role of incentives and concessions in the development of small scale industries with special reference to two districts of Karnataka– one relatively backward, viz. Bidar and another relatively forward, viz., Dharwad. The major findings of the study may be summed up as under: (i) Incentives and concessions have largely influenced the location decision of the entrepreneurs; (ii) incentives and concessions have given birth to the first generation of entrepreneurs; (iii) by and large, the entrepreneurs are not happy about the support and cooperation extended by governmental agencies; (iv) Entrepreneurs from the relatively forward district of Dharwad expressed a more favourable attitude towards liberalization than those from the backward district of Bidar.Experts in the field who reviewed the book have remarked that it is an exhaustive analytical study of the role of incentives and concessions in the development of small scale industrial units, and that it is written in a lucid and readable style. As such, the book with assuredly be an authentic and reliable source of reference for policy makers as well as researchers in the field. There are suggestions in it for entrepreneurs as well.
