The present work endeavours to study the of rural male out-migration with special reference to rural development, basing itself on the study of Bihar in general and Bhagalpur district in particular. It addresses five basic issues of out-migration: demographic and socio-economic characteristics of out-migrants with their native places, determinants of out-migration on the places of origin. It highlights the territorial redistribution of population in geographical perspectives. Further again, it is path breaking, methodologically and theoretically, in its examination of the relationship between out-migration and development. The out-migrants from Bihar make an important contribution to the economy of India, yet everywhere they go they meet discrimination and rejection.
