This book deals with the hitherto neglected first phase of the National Education Movement. Satis Chandra Mukherjee, the doyen of this movement comes live in this account. The Dawn Society which embodied this movement gets full coverage of its activities here. Science and technology got high priority in its agenda. Through its mouthpiece, the Dawn Magazine, a series of articles on Science & Technology were published. A selection of these papers has been analysed in this text and the selection has been printed as the appendices. This is the second volume of a project on ‘Science and Nationalism in Bengal 1876-1947’ sponsored by the Indian National Science Academy, New Delhi, for the authors at Jadavpur University.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR Chittrabrata Palit
Dr. Chittabrata Palit is a Professor of History at Jadavpur University. A noted historian and an authority on 19th century Bengal, he is of late engaged in writing a social history of science in Bengal. Apart from many papers on the subject, he has already edited, 'Science, Technology, Medicine and Environment in India. Historical Perspectives' (1998) and authored 'Mahendralal Sircar and National Science' (2000).
ABOUT THE AUTHOR Subrata Pahari
Dr. Subrata Pahari was a Research Associate of the INSA project on ‘Science and Nationalism in Bengal 1876-1947’. Author of many articles on the social history of science, he has authored a book on Traditional Medicine in Bengal (in Bengali) and co-authored ‘Mahendralal Sircar and National Science’.
