Pulses are most important in the context of health and nutrition, second only to cereals, in this country. This book covers in broad detail the entire gamut of pulse production, including constraints and strategies for improvement in quality and quantity as well as productivity of various pulse crops. It incorporates the use of technology, both pre- and post-harvest, available varieties and their advantages and drawbacks in different climate zones as well as use of different types of fertiliser and pest treatment regimes. All the general parameters are related specifically to each pulse crop. An entire chapter has been devoted to every pulse variety, wherein is described the distribution, classification, botany, cropping system, soil preparation requirements and dozens of other factors that pertain to that particular pulse. All major pulses grown in India have been individually covered to ensure that crop-specific attributes are taken into account. This book is essential reading for agronomists, breeders and agriculturists in general who are involved in improvement of crop quality and yield of pulses through the latest methods.
