Rabindranath Tagore was a very accomplished poet who had been endowed with supernatural powers of language and expression. He not only wrote poems and songs but also gave music to them. Besides poems, he also wrote essays, memoirs, plays, novels and short stories which were, and still are, appreciated by the old and the young alike. His short stories, which range from innocent, child like stories like Kabuliwala to detective and social ones, occupy a prominent place in Bangla literature even today. We have tried to present here, some of his famous short stories to the best of our ability. Some of these, like Kabuliwala and Sampati (Uphaar in Hindi), have even been made into filsm. We have tried to maintain the quality and original flavour of these evergreen stories and hope the readers will appreciate and enjoy these.
