Unemployment in India both in terms of magnitude and severity poses a formidable challenge. As per the result the 55th NSSO survey, the rate of employment on Current Daily Status (CDS) basis declined. In addition, the number of job seekers is increasing from one five Year Plan to the other Five Year Plan period. To overcome this menace, a Task Force on employment opportunities was set up by the Planning Commission, Government of India to suggest appropriate strategies to generate 100 million jobs in a decade. The TF advocated to the government to make efficient policies on education as well as skill development and, thus, upgrade the quality of the labour force and make them capable of supporting the process of creating high quality jobs for the unemployed youth. ABOUT THE AUTHOR D. Chennappa

Dr. D. Chennappa (b. 1965) is Associate Professor of Commerce at Osmania University, Hyderabad. He obtained his M.Com., M.Phil., and Ph.D. degrees from Osmania University, Hyderabad. He has 15 years of teaching and research experience. He qualified National Eligibility Test (NET-1996) conducted by UGC, New Delhi. He has been teaching Management Accounting, Organisation Theory and Behaviour and Quantitative Techniques for Business Decisions at the Post Graduate level. He undertook three minor research Projects sponsored by Government of Andhra Pradesh. He participated in two International Seminars and more than 25 National Seminars and conferences. he has presented many research papers in the seminars and conferences. In addition, many of his research papers were published in various journals. He is a life member of the Indian Commerce Association and Indian Accounting Association. His areas of research interest include Self-Employment Schemes and Indian Financial System. His recent books New Economic Policy and Self Employment Scheme and Poverty Alleviation Through Self Employment were widely acclaimed.
