A shock wave is a phenomenon in the realm of fluid mechanics, characterised by a sudden change in the characteristics of the medium, such as pressure, temperature and speed. It may arise at explosions, detonation, supersonic movements of bodies, powerful electric discharges, etc. The scope of the research pertaining to this phenomena varies from basic shock wave phenomena in gases, liquids and solids to their interdisciplinary applications in earth sciences (e.g., to clarify the mechanism of volcanic eruption and to predict and overcome blast disasters), medical treatment (in urology, orthopaedics, rheumatology, cardiology, gastroenterology, cancer treatment, orthopaedic surgery, neuro-surgery, etc), and industry (automobile, semiconductor, space, etc). This book covers papers presented at the 25th international symposium on shock waves held at IISc, Bangalore, in July 2005. They span a wide range of interdisciplinary areas of research in shock waves including hypersonic, scramjet engine development; space travel; and physical, chemical, biological and medical applications of shock waves. The papers fall under a broad range of shock wave-related topics, including: Supersonic and hypersonic aerodynamics Theoretical aspects and numerical simulations Shockwave interactions Chemical kinetics and reaction mechanisms Shockwave applications (industry, genetics, agriculture, metallurgy, drug delivery, astronomy, geosciences, etc) Shockwaves in solids Experimental facilities and diagnostics Supersonic combustion and scramjets Multiphase flows Detonation phenomena Blast waves and explosions High-speed liquid jets This book will be an invaluable reference for researchers, particularly in fluid dynamics, and has relevance to the sciences (physics, chemistry, life sciences) and engineering (mechanical, aerospace, biomedical, defence, space). Departmental libraries of universities, research centres, defence labs, department of space and industries with R&D facilities will find this book useful.
