In sericulturally advanced countries, the seed production technologies have been perfected to its highest level. Though, in India silkworm seed production is practiced since decades, it is yet to be standardized to its perfection. To meet the requirement of seed to Indian sericulture farmers, the country requires more than 30 crore disease free commercial silkworm seed. However, all the agencies in the country together produce only 24 crore disease free layings (Dfls) and this there is production shortage of some six crore disease free layings.

Spread over ten chapters, the book has wide coverage on disinfection and hygiene, egg production technologies, embryonic development, egg diapause and biochemical modulations, preservation of eggs, hibernation schedules, artificial hatching of eggs for rearing of silkworm in appropriate season, methods of incubation, adaptation to changing environment besides prevention and control of Pebrine disease of eggs and pests to achieve sustained and quality silkworm eggs and stable cocoon crop. The technical components are meticulously incorporated in this book to make it fairly comprehensive reference material.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR Madan Mohan Bhat

Madan Mohan Bhat is Scientist-D and In-Charge Regional Sericultural Research Station, Central Silk Board, Ministery of Textiles, Govt. of India, Sahaspur, Dehradun (Uttrakhand).  He obtained M. Sc. Degree in Zoology (Entomology) from Ranchi University.  He jopined Central Silk Board in 1978 and worked in various capacities for over 31 years in R&D and extension establishments from mulberry to non-mulberry and North to North East gaining rich knowledge in the field of wild and domestic silk and seed production and extension and good contribution to the subject.  He authored a book on sericulture.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR Mohammad Ashraf Khan

Mohammad Ashraf Khan, Ph. D. in Entomology is Director in Central Sericultural Research & Training Institute, Central Silk Board, Ministry of Textiles, Govt. of India, Pampore (J&K).  He is renowned sericulture scientist with excellent track record of silk research and member of various academic and scientific bodies.  He steered the institute to higher levels of S&T research and also spreading to synergize sericulture R&D programmes, extension research and field extension works in the states of J&K, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab, Rajasthan, Uttrakhand and Uttar Pradesh.  Dr. Khan is pioneer in laying the foundation of sericulture collaborative research programmes in North Indian states.  Dr. Khan to his credit has over 200 scientific and technical papers and participated in various National and International Conferences and Seminars and authored two books.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR Tribhuwan Singh

Dr. Tribhuwan Singh, an M.Sc wit Ph. D in Entomology from Allahabad University is Senior Research Officer in Central Silk Board, Ministry of Textiles, Govt. of India, Bangalore. He has 25 years of research experience and has authored more than 80 research, technical and review papers in leading National and international especially in the field of silkworm seed technology, silkworm breeding and genetics and also has contributed in evolution of several multivoltine silkworm breeds and hybrids. Dr. Singh is recognized by the United Nations as a resource person in sericulture in Asia and pacific region. Dr. Tibhuvan Singh has been honored with the presggious Rashrtiya Gaurav Award and is also the recipient of Best Citizen Award from international publishing house, New Delhi. Dr. Singh is a member of Research Board of advisor of American biographical institute use and nominated for the man of the year 2002 by ABI, Inc Carolina, USA for his contribution.
