Until recently, studies in gerontology have mostly been conducted by scholars in the context of Western societies. As a result of constant increase in the population of 60+ in India and the problems associated with this segment of people due to improved life expectancy, several scholars have devoted themselves to researching on this gap in our knowledge about the economic, psychological, social problems of the aged, their demographic trends, profile projections, changing role of family, impact of urbanization and housing, religion, health, crime and violence, utilization of their skills, law and role of government programmes, voluntary organizations and old age homes in the care of the elderly. Attempted with different analytical perspectives and varied methodologies, the studies reflect a wide spectrum of thinking and insightful reflections on the subject. This bibliographical study is a modest attempt to capture the richness of this literature and to make available to scholars at one place this wealth generated in the past more than hundred years on elderly in India. This publication will be useful for social gerontologists, sociologists, dynamics of social structure and culture demographers, policy makers and planners, voluntary organizations working for the welfare of the aged people and also for all university libraries with sociology departments, and all social science research institutions.
