Crime are Committed when they are easy to commit. The research suggests as many as forty percent crime in any society are the product of easy opportunity. The present research is a pioneering contribution to a lesser known area in criminology in India. Situational Crime Prevention (SCP) as technique has received tremendous success in curtailing the crime rate by reducing the opportunities for committing crime by making it difficult for a criminal to commit crime. The present research is the outcome of author’s study of SCP in the UK as commonwealth Fellow. The SCP model has been successfully implemented in the UK and has produced encouraging result. Inspired by this study, the author undertook a major research project funded by the University Grants Commission, New Delhi to study the scope of SCP in India. The present book is based on the findings of these two studies. In India also a sizable number of crime results form the easy opportunity and due the lake of any effective thinking on crime prevention. This empirical research has been conducted in several parts of Madhya Pradesh on a sample of more than 600 crimes. It was found that SCP measures like target hardening and crime reduction technique of opportunity reduction can prove to be a deterrent to crime. About forty percent crime in India is estimated to be effectively intervened by SCP measures. The Police need to train to use these problem specific measures. The research emphasizes that the focus of Indian criminology research has been insufficient on preventive aspect of crime control. The findings in this study identify the scope where the SCP can be applied. This book would be useful to those interested in the advanced criminology research and criminal justice planning.
