The rapid pace of urbanization during the last few decades has resulted in explosive growth of cities throughout the world. With urbanization comes the challenge of providing jobs, shelter, clean environment, portable water – a challenge which is not being met as in evident in most of the cities in the developing countries where almost 30 to 40 per cent of the population lives below poverty line and mostly reside in the slum. UN studies now project that mega cities will grow more slowly from 2005 onwards and smaller cities will see bigger change as growth spills into them. Since the growth of slum is a manifestation of the urban poverty, it has become imperative to raise the quality of life by creating conditions conducive to the achievement of crucial objectives in terms of shelter, health, sanitation and education, create substantial additional employment opportunities and dispersed economic activities. The book on ‘Slum in India: A case study of Bhubaneswar city’ has probed deep into the problems, integrated all connected issues and provided suggestive measures for meeting the challenge.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR L N P Mohanty
Dr. L.N.P. Mohanty, was born on the 14th December 1955. He obtained his Ph.D. degree in Political Science from Utkal University in 1989. He works as a Reader in Political Science in Orissa, and had served on deputation for a period of six years till February, 1996, first as Regional Director of All Indian Institute of Local Self Government, Bhubaneswar and then as Professor of National Institute of Habitat Management, Bhubaneswar. He has been associated with training, research and consultancy in the field of Urban Management and Local Government. Being selected by Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute as a Faculty Research Fellow, he was in Mc Gill University, Montreal, Canada from February to August, 2001. Besides publishing articles in various journals and newspapers, he has authored 2 books in English, 2 books in Oriya and co-edited one book in English.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR Swati Mohanty
Smt. Swati Mohanty (15 December 1959 – 7th September 2004) obtained her M.A. and M.Phil degrees in Analytical and Applied Economics from Utkal University, Bhubaneswar. She joined Orissa Education service in 1982 as a Lecturer in Economics and had served in the premier degree and autonomous colleges of the state of Orissa, viz., R.D. Women’s College, Bhubaneswar, B.J.B. College, Bhubaneswar, S.B. Women’s College, Cuttack, and M.P.C. College, Baripada. Her articles on Housing, Slum and Globalisation were published in various journals.
