The imagery in my paintings comes mostly from my personal experiences. It is this visual world and its impact on me that I try to reveal in my work. The city life of Calcutta with its sights and sounds finds a place in my paintings over and over again. Many of my works are the revelation of the light and shade, struggles and strivings of the spirit of this city which I absorb through my experience. In the tender days of my childhood, I spent a couple of months in our village home, now in Bangladesh. This stay, though short, left an everlasting impression on me. Perhaps the soft, tranquil and verdant landscapes of the countryside and the everflowing rivers made me dip my brushes in water colour in which I find the same flowing quality. Water-colour has never been regarded as a major medium of painting, But to me there are immense possibilities in it and I find it capable of expressing my delicate and finer feelings. I faced many problems in handling of the medium, but I tried to solve them in my own way. And today I have succeeded in evolving my own water-colour, the acid test of which I leave to posterity.
