Managing solid waste has become crucial for the health of urban citizens and for improving competitiveness of cities in India. As a result of public interest litigation, the Supreme Court of India ruled that major cities were to adopt appropriate systems of solid waste management by 2003, and even published a detailed handbook describing appropriate steps and standards. Solid waste includes domestic waste, municipal waste, commercial waste, garbage (animal and vegetable waste), rubbish (Inorganic excluding ashes), ashes and industrial waste, sludge from wastewater treatment plants etc. Actually mainly the population living in the urban area produces much more solid waste than the rural one. The book may not only provide reference but also serve as a guide and inspiration of future research into the realm of solid waste management. The environmentalists, scholars, administrators dealing with environmental protection are expected to find this book indispensable.
