Medieval period witnessed socio-religious movements-Sufi and Bhakti, that attempted to harmonise social relationship. Great saints of the period propagated human brotherhood that led to far reaching impacts on the social milieu. Today we stand at the threshold of caste and religious division, corruption and degradation of moral and social values. This book aims at reiterating the message of Sufi and Bhakti saints t thwart these evils of the society. Renowned scholars of the discipline have deliberated upon various issues pertaining to the world today and the teachings of saints on these important issues. Important saints like Rumi, Baba Farid, Nizamuddin Auliya, Maneri, Nanak, Kabir etc. and their contributions to the society form part of this exercise. The saints’ contributions towards inter-community coexistence, communal harmony, humanism etc. are also important components of the work. The idea is to reiterate the message of these saints, as these have eternal relevance.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR Hamid Hussain
Hamid Hussain has the unique distinction of being a prolific writer,a powerful orator and an able administrator in the Government of India. After having passed the Civil Service Examination, he has worked with various Ministries of Govt. of Indian like Agriculture, External Affairs, Home and Defence Ministries. His contribution in Agriculture extention programmes throughout the length and breadth of the country as the Head of the Department and Director (Administration) of the Directorate of Extension, Ministry of Agriculture has been immence and laudable. Mr. Hussain holds a Master’s degree in Political Science from Sambhalpur University and M. Phil. Degree from JNU. His doctorate on the theme of “Indian Federalism: The Emerging Trends†is under completion. He has been writing on national and international issues in various journals. He is also a propounder of inter-faith harmony and has shared numerous for a in this regard. His views specially on liberal, secular and progressive aspects of Islam are popular. In addition, he works for tribal welfare in western part of Orissa and has a research work to his credit on agriculture backwardness in the region, which is also under publication. Presently he is also working in a proposed edited volume titled “Indian Secularism: Chellenges and Prospects."
