Swara Sanchara of Popular Janya Ragas is a boon to the beginner, a refresher to the vocalist and a maestro's magnificent source of training made available by an accomplished and erudite expert.  The art of expression with facility and felicity, the manner of simplified presentation with popular appeal are the hall mark of this fascinating musical handbook.  The subject has been dealt with the ease and dexterity of a master.  Why, Ramaswamy is a versatile master, an innovative writer and one committed to Karnatic Music as an upasaka.  His father N.R.P. Iyer who was himself a notable musician is rewarded by a son who is a scientist turned artist of renown.  The author rightly highlights one unique fact: Certain music books available in thje market, include raga lakshanas of a few ragas but there the phrases given are too short for the student to grasp the sancharas properly.  Also there is no single book for reference, which gives a proper knowledge of all the popular Janya Ragas.  This book has both the advantages-it contains most of the popular janya ragas and also elaborate swara sancharas of these ragas.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR N.P. Ramaswamy

Sri N.P. Ramaswamy belongs to an illustrious family of great musicians.  His great grandfather Palghat Parameswara Bhagavathar was a senior and chief Asthana Vidwan in the Courts of Swathi Thirunal Maharaja.  His grandfather Nurani Parameswara Bhagavathar was equally adept in singing and in playing violin and was a well known Harikatha exponent.  His father was a popular musician of the previous generation.  Sri Ramaswamy is blessed with abundant musical talent.  Over the years the musical fraternity has vastly admired his grip over raga and laya.  In mor than forty years of concert rendering Sri Ramaswamy has been acclaimed as a "Scientific Singer", one who has always aimed at purity, precision perfection and tradition.  Titles conferred on him are: "Sangeetha Rathna" and "Sangeetha Poornasree".  Sri Ramaswamy has set to tune many songs of prominent composers like Purandaradas, Bhadrachalam Ramadas, and Narayanatheerthar.  Recently on the persuation of his disciples he has ventured into giving shape to his imagination and jnana by composing Varnams and Kritis.  In a very short period of time, these have attained a great deal of popularity for their musical appeal and their crisp laya prayogas.  On the request of many students of music to bring out a brief and instructive book on the basic techniques of Manodharma Swara Singing, Ramaswamy has published a book entitled "Techniques of Manodharma Swara Singhing Made Easy" which explains the intricacies of Swara singing in a step by step approach easily understandable for music students and teachers.
