The volume is the outcome of the ‘National Seminar on Social Work Education in India: Realities and Responses’, organized jointly by the Department of Social Work, Delhi University, Department of Social Work, Jamia Millia Islamia and the Department of Social Work, Lucknow University, in collaboration with the Association of Schools of Social Work in India, held at New Delhi, November 9-11, 2002. It contains 25 selected papers covering most the important aspects of Social Work education and practice in India. The papers identify, articulate and appraise the critical challenges and issues confronting social work education in India with a view to revamp and reorganize the teaching, field work and research so as to make these suit and respond to contemporary context of Indian Society and culture. The papers examine the retrospect and prospects of the profession to make it adequately prepared to fact the futuristic challenges. The contributors have made their own assessment of the situation and have come up with their thoughtful suggestions to provide for fresh direction to make the profession relevant the responsive to contemporary Indian society. The theme song of the papers is that the profession has to go into a new action mode to effectively address to the core concerns of the future of social work education in the country to not only consolidate the gains of the past, but also to enlarge and enhance the profession’s future prospects. The volume is intended to be interesting, absorbing and instructing for both the social work educators and professional social workers in the country. The volume adds significantly to enriching the new insights and understanding of the profession in contemporary times.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR S.P. Srivastava

Born in 1962 in Patiala (Punjab) in the family of Scholars and Artists, the author of this book obtained Master’s degree in fine arts in First division and Ph.D. in his field of specialization. Art and Cultural Heritage of Patiala from Rohilkhand University, Bareilly (India). D.Litt work is in progress. His recent publication is Guru Nanak in Indian Painting. He was invited by the International Congress of Asian and African Studies held in September, 1990 in Toronto (Canada) to present a paper on the arts of Patiala. Having recognized his scholastic caliber and achievement, the Royal Asiatic Society of England has elected him a Fellow of the Society. He has been invited by several Universities of America and Europe. Presently, he is associated with the Post Graduate Department of Fine Arts, Government College for Women, Patiala, Punjab, teaching and research. Besides, he specialises in the field of art of architectural photography and that too of the ornaments and miniatures.
