On teacher preparation there are numerous books already but on preparing teachers for the knowledge society, whose concept itself is less than a decade old, this is perhaps the only book available in the Indian market. It not only defines the nature of knowledge society but also offers the outline of the type of curriculum teachers much undergo to be able to fit into a new set up. Countries like India that are gradually emerging from the stupor of colonialism are vying for a space in the sun. There are no shortcuts to power, particularly when its defining quality lies in the quality of education it could offer to its citizenry. In the ultimate analysis the quality of education could be defined in terms of its teachers. Logically therefore we must focus on teacher preparation. Alas! The agencies (like the NCTE, MHRD etc.) that should have taken care of this aspect of education are themselves suffering from a lack of both will and vision. Therefore, our association (All India association of teacher educators) has taken up the challenge to pinpoint the lacunae and the solutions to overcome them. It is hoped that the readers will find the status report as comprehensive and welcome as the suggestions given for implementing a well-defined vision and a goal, which is to enable India acquire an edge over others. In a competitive world this could be done only via education and the teachers have to prove it.
