“Food nutrition and environmental security†symbolizes the three basic needs which any cultivated society must guarantee to its people. Attaining food security has been the major objective for the entire nation since independence. Thanks to cutting edge of science, strong political will coupled with appropriate policies interventions and the hard labour of farmers of India since independence achieved four fold increase in food grain production as against three fold increase in population. We have had a record harvest of 212 million tones during 2001-02. Now our aim to sustain this production and also to safe guard the environment. In the coming decade and by the year 2020, there will be an extra 1.5 billion people to be fed. This is another challenge, as great as it was 40-50 years ago which necessitated the first green revolution. This came as a mixed blessing for mankind. If the increasing threat of soil degradation, food contamination, crop genetic erosion and food shortages has to be avoided, there has to be a pragmatic changes in the technologies to be adopted for different farming sectors by the rural masses. The book contains eighteen chapters on varied topics covering the major gametes of food security and sustainable agriculture includes Dryland agriculture, Management of Irrigated Agriculture, INM, IPM, Farm Mechanization, RES, PHT, Organic Farming, Horticulture, Plant Genetic engineering, Livestock Information technology, Agribusiness Management, etc. the topics have been written by eminent scientists. The organizations, institutes and universities represented by the authors are IARI, New Delhi, Central Institute of Agricultural Engineering, Bhopal, BHU, Varanasi, IARI, New Delhi, M.R. Morarka, GDC Rural Research Foundation, Jaipur, Institute of Development Studies, Jaipur and Maharana Pratap University of Agriculture and Technology, Udaipur. The eminence of authors and institutions they represent gives credence to the contents of the book. It is hoped that the wealth of information available in this book will be useful to scientist, academicians, research and development managers, administrators and policy makers in taking stock of magnitude of challenges facing the new age agriculture and the possible strategies and approaches to address the concerns relating to future household food security and sustainable agriculture.
