ABOUT THE AUTHOR Suresh Joshi

Suresh Joshi, one of the foremost modern Gujarati writers, published short stories, poems, essays, literary criticism and several important novels besides translations from Indian languages and English into Gujarati. He declined a Sahitya Akademi Award for a collection of critical essays because the prize/citation did not recognize his creative writing. Suresh Joshi (1921-1986) made his fictional debut with the publication of his short story collection "Grihapravesh" in 1957. It was followed by other collections. His short stories infused the art of short fiction in Gujrati with a sense of novelty and gave a philosophy to modern writing in the language in general. He generated a profound modernist enthusiasm in the field and ushered in a new era in Gujrati literature. Joshi's short stories expose cultural fissures while devising links to trace pathways to the country of the mind.
