The international trade in textiles had been long governed by the implementation of Multifibre Agreement right from 1974. It had also enabled the developed nations mainly the USA, European Union and Canada to restrict imports from developing countries through a system of quotas. Consequently, it was taken for granted that the quota regime had frozen the market share, providing export opportunities even for high cost producers. In the light of the above, the global textile industry should gear up to face the competition ahead. The industry should restructure itself to reduce costs, improve productivity, and innovate in technology implementation to survive in the long run. This book also considers individual case studies of both developed and developing countries in respect of quota abolition.
