Textile Traditions of Bangladesh is the first dedicated volume to study the textiles of Bangladesh. If had been a long-cherished project of NCCB to publish a volume on textiles as Bangladesh has a staggering variety of handlooms. The present volume contains nine essays largely based on research and field work, covering the various facets of the industry. Each of the essays aims to unfold the history of a particular kind of product in this region as well as document related techniques, design, patterns and motifs.

Some major objectives of the book are to investigate the current situation in the handloom sector, to explore the importance of developing institutional support for these textiles and to develop future strategis for the promotion of the handloom sector. The book will help supplement necessary design and product development services to weavers and embroiderers and ensure them greater access to domestic and international markets. There will also be scope for planners, policy-makers and business entrepreneurs to demonstrate how traditional artisans can interact with designers and craft developers to innovate and diversify their products. It is hopped that the primary beneficiaries of this effort will be the more than million weavers with a large number of other craftspeople like dyers and printers engaged in the handloom sector. The vast number of women involved in kantha embroidery in the rural areas will also benefit from this book. At least for the first time in Bangladesh, both producers and consumers will have an access to an organized reference work on the textile traditions of Bangladesh.
