The book for the first time attempts to embody a comprehensive study on the Architecture and Art of the Kakatiyas, a medieval kingdom of South India. The existing historiography on the Kakatiyas only reveal the political and economical conditions of the period from 12th to 14th century A.D. expecting a few contextual references to art and architecture. The author has successfully collected plethora of information on the architectural traits and salient features of the prevailing art traditions as a result became the present book. To discuss the above in the authentic manner, contemporary socio-religious, technological and ideological aspects are also taken into consideration. Various type of the Kakatiyas temples basing on plans and elevations are detailed in the first instance. Elaborate discussions are made in the book on the vertical axis of the temple such as Upapeetha, Adhisthana, Padavarga, Prasthara and Vimanas with their typo-technological aspects. The book corroborates texts and traditions of the Kakatiyas period in building activity along with explanation on terminology which facilitates the readers. In the absence of an authentic work on Kakatiya art, this book offers the art traditions of the both sculpture and painting, talents of the artists and their style. This book forms the source book, not only on the art and architecture of the Kakatiyas, but also the cultural spectrum of the period.
