D. Suran Naidu has certainly put in a great deal of mental and physical effort to have produced such a detailed account of a major national party and its evolution at the village, town, district and state level. The Congress Party in Transition explains all the aberrations and deviations of the political experience in Srikakulam district of Andhra Pradesh. It also explains the reasons for the occasional hostile reception of the Congress Party by a backward people, cut off from the mainstream of national life. The vexed question of party hopping or defection is put in true perspective with personalities like Prof. N.G. Ranga, Sanjiva Reddy and V.V. Giri taking part in the electoral struggle at the Assembly and Parliamentary level. The lack of permanent influence of the Freedom Movement on the politics of the district is an interesting topic of discussion.
