As a curtain in the process of unfolding uncovers the hidden things behind it, in the same way The Curtain Raiser: Unfolding the Fair Sex depicts the various hidden and ignored facets of Indian woman from the dawn of civilization to the present times. The book is divided in three sections ancient, medieval and modern and covers the subject through the existing literature as the author has collected the material from the dusty records of the dim past and woven them into a connected history on a particular theme. In his treatment of the subject, he is guided by objective and critical analysis of the analysis of the available data. Written lucidly in jargon free language this work is not only of interest to serious students and discerning teachers but to anyone willing to learn about Indian women. The thoroughness of the discussions, clarity of arguments and the wide spectrum of sources are its other merits.
