The present monograph tries to unfold the tremendous impact of Lord Shiva and his associates on the social, cultural, religious and psychological outlook and practice of the people. This research work is the first of its kind giving a very interesting account of the practice of pledging manautis and observing Parthiva Poojana at Jageshwar, the seat of Swayambhu (self-born) linga. VI assesses devotees' views regarding these temples and Ch.VII gives a resume of the preceding chapters. These are appendices dealing with important Shiva-temples of Kumaun, twelve Jyotrilingas, inscriptions of Jageshwar. Examples of devotees' prayers, Lord Shiva's famous stutis, Shiva Peethas. Rudraksha Shree Maha Mrityunjaya-Kavach Yantram, the questionnaire, items of shiva Poojana and Parthiva Poojana, Shiva-sahasranamavali. The work, a happy mingling of historical, archaeological and sociological study, is very interesting document on Indian culture and civilization. This study is of special relevance and great academic interest and importance for those who are eager to appreciate this priceless treasure of Indian art and cultural heritage. ABOUT THE AUTHOR C.M. Agrawal

C.M. Agrawal (b. 1954), M.A., Ph.D., D.Litt. did B.A. (Hons.) and M.A. in History in 1973 & 1975 respectively and stood first in first class. He was awarded three merit scholarships, the National Scholarship, a Gold Medal and U.G.C. Fellowship. In 1978 he began his career as a Lecturer in History, Kumaun University Campus, Almora. He received Ph.D. and D.Litt. degrees in 1979 and 1985 respectively. His published works include: Aurangzeb and his Wazirs; Great Natural Calamities; Hindu Officers under Akbar; Medieval Researches; Golu Devata: The God of Justice of Kumaun Himalayas; History of Kumaun, Vols. I & II; Dimensions of Indian Womanhood Vols. He has also contributed more than three dozen research papers to national and international conferences and seminars. Eighteen Research Scholars have got Ph.D. Degree under his supervision. Dr. Agrawal chaired the 44th session of the 17th Annual Conference on South Asia at the University of Wisconsin, Madison U.S.A. in Nov. 1988. He again visited U.S.A. in Nov. 1989 to attend the next session of the above Conference.
