ABOUT THE AUTHOR Prem Hari Har Lal

Sixty-five years old Prem Hari Har La was born, and bred and is living in the Valley of the Doon. His grandfather came to Dehra Dun as the first 'Bakshi' (Tax Superintendent) of the local municipality, on its formation, in 1867. Since then the family has lived in the Valley and played an important role in its development. The author's father Barrister Darshan Lal was at one time Chairman of Mussoorie City Board and a leading lawyer of the district. The author himself is a graduate in natural sciences and law. He was the chief executive for 30 years of the two public limited Tea companies of the Doon in which capacity he represented Tea companies of the Doon in which capacity he represented the local industry at various national and international forums. Apart from his official work he has been an active Rotarian, Freemason and a social worker. Being a son of the Doon his interest in its past was kindled on reading the story of Bhagirath and his bringing the Ganga waters to the plains of India as told by Valmiki in his epic the 'Ramayan' and identifying his geological and geographical descriptions on the ground. This followed five years of research in going through and collecting the written material available on the Doon and its neighbourhood. The result of his labour of love for the Doon Valley is this book. He has tried to trace the history of the Doon from the mythological times to the modern.
