Volume I of "The Fauna of India–Isoptera (Termites)", including general information on the order and the families Termopsidae, Hodotermitidae, Kalotermitidae, Rhinotermitidae, Stylotermitidae and Indotermitidae, was published in the year 1989 in collaboration with Dr. M.L. Roonwal, the well known authority on termites. It is unfortunate that Dr. Roonwal is now no more and the author had to take up this stupendous task of bringing out Volume II which includes the family Termitidae. It is represented by 239 species which is more than twice the number of the species (98 species) included in all the six families treated in Volume I. The presentation of data is in conformity with that of Volume I. As many as 337 species of termites are now known from the Indian subregion and all the 239 of the family Termitidae are described and adequately figured here. Keys for easy identification of various genera under different subfamilies and for the species of different genera are provided. The bibliography at the end of two volumes should come to be useful to the future workers on termites as it is complete so far as taxonomy of these insects from the Indian region is concerned.
