The Fiction of Carson McCullers: Quest for Love

Carson McCullers is one of the major South American novelists of the forties who turned away from socio-political issues and created a significant body of ‘new fiction’, marked by a shift in focus—from the outward to the inward. The present book focusses on the question of identity and individual’s need to find meaning in existence. The study probes the issues of loneliness and quest for love. This approach, the assertion of love, has a great significance in the present-day world, affected by the loss of value system and the absence of love for others. The book makes a rich contribution to the corpus of American women’s writing as also to the creed of existentialism as a positive humanistic philosophy.
