The book seeks to present a feminist critique of Nayantara Sahgal’s fiction. Feminism for ‘all its various concerns is predominantly a school of thought, which focuses on women-existence. Women’s multifarious personality makes it imperative that feminism take into account various aspects of the issue. Though Nayantara Sahgal has been hailed chiefly as a political novelist, her feminist concern is quite overt and her fighter spirit quite vocal in her fiction. Sahgal’s concern for women, however, is that of a humanist more than it is of a feminist. This accounts for her holistic vision. Though defiant, all her women are not viragos as also though overpowering all her men are not demons. She holds a truly Indian approach to the issue and adds a new dimension to feminist philosophy without joining the fighter band. A real life crusader Sahgal knows where the shoe pinches and makes no scruples about the not-so-healthy vision of life that even some women hold. The book is a pioneering work on Sahgal’s fiction inasmuch as it takes into account the last novels of Sahgal plans for departure and mistaken identity which have hitherto not been much talked about.
