The book is divided into four sections. The first section of the book highlights various forms of violence and discrimination against women. It discusses issues of crucial importance such as female foeticide and infanticide, poor educational facilities for women, health-care, nutrition and restrictions on women in matters of inheriting property. It also points out that a significant portion of women’s work is unpaid, why such work is not considered for calculating GDP, and quantifies the negative fallout of this on the global economic growth rate. The second section deals with the challenges faced by women at the workplace and discrimination based on gender. It brings out the role of women in the workplace, the status of women workers, how they are usually restricted to the peripheral jobs and the barriers in reaching top positions in the organization. The third section gives a few examples of gender discrimination worldwide. It brings to light the status of working women in America, Singapore, Middle East, North Africa and India. The final section of the book discusses various initiatives taken to eliminate such discrimination and the road ahead. It talks about the role men themselves are playing in eliminating violence against women and also about how initiatives like gender budgeting empower women.
