As the title suggests, the book covers 30 years out of the 60 years since India’s independence. It’s a story of the Janata Factor in Indian politics during last 30 years. The story begins in 1977 with formation of the First Non-Congress Government in New Delhi, when Morarji Desai, who had always wanted to be the Prime Minister, finally became one. The story ends in 2007, when Dr. Manmohan Singh, who had hardly ever dreamt to be in politics, is the Prime Minister now. Transformation in country’s socio-political arena from 1977 to 2007 is of tremendous significance in grasping the contemporary history and politics of India. While the book cannot claim to be a detailed documentation of this entire transformation, it certainly covers a very important aspect of it. That aspect is country’s Central Government and politics. Reference to state politics in this book is, at best, incidental. Backbone of the book is author’s M.Phill. Dissertation, submitted in 1992. Title of that dissertation was "The two Janata Experiments: A Comparative Study". Needless to add that there have been more ‘Janata Experiments’ since then and the book covers all of them till date.
