The present work answers this demand. The book begins with the analysis of the role and place of the state and its front, the public administration, in the larger society. It discusses the growth and development of public administration in India since the early days of the colonial rule till the present day. It scans the administrative content of the Constitution of India. But the work’s principal focus is on the machinery of governance at the central, state and local levels. It discusses the composition and functions of each ministry and department, which sets it apart from other works. Attached and subordinate offices of the government find separate treatment. So are state governments, union territories and local government. A select bibliography further adds to the value of the book to the curious reader. The style of the book is simple, direct and lucid.
