The Man-Eating Wolves of Ashta, is the true story of a pack of man eating wolves that appeared suddenly in the Sehore district of the state of Madhya Pradesh, in central India. These wolves accounted for the deaths of 17 children within the span of less than three months and struck terror in an area roughly the size of state of Delhi. Operating in rugged, hilly terrain, the wolves killed only during the hours of daylight, and after securing their victims, disappeared into densely growing fields of jowar and sugar cane. Hardly anyone ever saw these animals, they came and went like phantoms, and kept scores of trained shikaris, hundreds of armed policeman, and the whole paraphernalia of the administration on the run for more than two months. This book tells the exciting story of how these animals were outwitted and finally shot by a team of determined hunters. It also includes some eerie encounters with, ‘things beyond the pale’, and makes, on the whole, for an absorbing narrative.
