In a day when specialization is king, James E. Horne, phd, president of the Kerr Center for Sustainable Agriculture in Poteau, Okhlahoma, is there to remind us that a holistic perspective can often provide the best answers to contemporary agriculture issues. Dr. Home has a rare blend of diverse experiences in farming, policy, economics, education, and international agriculture that enables him to understand issues from various perspectives. Dr. Horne was in the sustainable camp before it had recognition. He need for the USDA to initiate programs in sustainable agriculture. Once the USDA Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education program was established, he continued with it, providing leadership and direction. At the same time he was breaking ground at the Kerr Centre, implementing and Farmer grants as well as developing the centre’s public policy and educational programs. He is also much in demand as a speaker.

Marua McDermott is Communication Director at the Kerr Center for Sustainable Agriculture in Poteau, Oklahoma. She is also a nationally recognized magazine writer, honored for her natural history/ environmental features in the state magazine Oklahoma Today. Additionally, she edits the Kerr Center’s newsletter Field Notes, which goes to five thousand subscribers, and writes about farmers and agricultural issues. She specializes in making agricultural and environmental topics accessible and interesting and to a broad range of readers.
