ABOUT THE AUTHOR Georg Buhler

Georg Buhler was born on 19 July 1837 at Borstel in Hanover. He graduated in Oriental Languages and Archaeology in 1858, studied Sanskrit at Paris, London and Oxford and became an eminent Orientalist. He became Professor of Oriental Languages at Elphinstone College, Bombay in 1863, Superintendent of Sanskrit Studies, Poona in 1866; Educational Inspector, N. Division, Bombay Presidency, 1868,1872. He edited many Sanskrit texts and discovered more than 5000 MSS., which the Indian Government distributed among British universities and various Collections. He left India in 1880. He, being a man of many-sided ability, gave his attention to ancient inscriptions and epigraphy. He brought out with Sir R. West, A Digest of Hindu Law, wrote a Sanskrit Primer, published a Glossary of the oldest Prakrit dictionary, collaborated in the series of Sacred Books of the East; translated the Laws of Manu. He also edited an Encyclopaedia of Indo-Aryan Philology and contributed his Indische Palaeographiem 1896. He passed away in 1898.
