The Shaping of Indian Science’ is a compendium of the speeches of the Presidents of the Indian Science Congress Association (ISCA) from 1914-2003.ISCA is a premier scientific institution which has been promoting Science and inculcating the spirit of Science since its inception in 1914. From its modest beginnings, ISCA has grown into a strong fraternity whose voice has had a decisive influence in directing Science in India from its infancy to its present status.ISCA’s annual meeting, the Indian Science Congress headed by an elected President, brings together scientists, science managers, policy makers and the general public to discuss national issues that have scientific and technological implications. Through the years, these Presidents have inspired the Congress by their speeches some of them visionary, some impassioned in their plea for Science, but all of them with a message that Science must be used for the good of the human race. The Presidents have been eminent personalities in the world of Science and have left their mark on the course of Science in India. ‘The Shaping of Indian Science’ was inspired by the belief that these luminaries deserved greater coverage in a reference source devoted exclusively to providing their messages and brief biographical sketches, in the hope that they will inspire a wider audience to take up the noble pursuit of Science.
