The Shompen of Great Nicobar Island are seminomadic forest dwellers of Mongoloid stock. This monograph by Dr. S.N.H. Rizvi is the outcome of four years of fieldwork and explores various aspects of Shompen life, including their identification population distribution, demographic features and state of health. Their social structure is examined in terms of the family, their life cycle from conception to death described along with associated rituals, and their economic organization discussed in relation to hunting, food gathering horticulture and the barter system.
