For a full century, the House of Jorasanko functioned as the cultural centre of this country. For three successive generations, the members of this family led all the important movements of the country in the field of religion, literature, music, education and social reforms. Dwarakanath Tagore, grand-father of Rabindranath was not only enthusiastic about the propagation of English education but was very much in favour of the spread of knowledge about western science. His son Debendranath championed the cause of the Hindu against the missionaries and campaigned for the abolition of the purdah system initiated by his wife, Jnandini Devi. The teaching of Rabindranath is profoundly new and creative. His poems and songs have preached a new kingdom of heaven in the hearts and in the world of men. Being a universally recognized novelist, playwright, painter and musician Rabindranath was a prominent figure in the India’s national movement and played a dynamic role in the dynamics of India’s political movement. This House of Tagores is the Great Age of Discovery. Its beauty occupies and inundates with light. With its grace and charm, it combines gaiety and mirth.
