This is the first study of one of the earliest and most important collections of modern Indian art. The process of acquisition was initiated and nurtured by Homi Jehangir Bhabha, founding director of the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research and one of the country’s foremost scientific institution-builders of the post-independence period.

The paintings and sculptures in the TIFR collection present a fascinating glimpse into the tastes prevalent at the dawn of the modern and contemporary Indian art scene and do much to challenge subsequent histories that have been written about this time. An invaluable resource for students of modern Indian art history, the book is also aimed at a general audience of art lovers.
