India has a substantial number of tribal population distributed in different states and union territories. They live in different ecological settings and have different cultural patterns, different economy, different social organizations, and systems of social control. They have embraced different religious beliefs and practices. They have their own health-care system. Though all these distinct cultural patterns have made them distinct, still their contact with other non-tribal people and dominant cultures, has brought marked changes in their socio-cultural life. This book has included forty nine articles and these have highlighted different aspects of the tribal life and activities like ethnicity and ethnic identity, education status, economic condition, social structure, health, nutrition and sanitation, women and children and development strategy. This book will definitely be very helpful to the academicians, scholars, research personnel, in understanding the tribal life in India and also to the planners, administrators social workers and others for planning and implementing different development programmes for the benefit of the tribal people of our country.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR Manis Kumar Raha
Dr. Manis Kumar Raha graduated from the University of Calcutta in 1956 and passed Special Honours in Anthropology in 1958. He obtained his M.Sc. (1960) and Ph.D. Degrees (1971) in Anghropology from this University. He served the Cultural Research Institute, Government of West Bengal 1962-70 before joining Anthropological Survey of India in 1970 as an Anghropologist (Cultural). After serving this pioneering organization of anthropological research in different capacities, he retired as the Joint Director in 1995. Dr. Raha has written / edited sixteen books, over ninety research papers and over forty book reviews. He is attached to different research and other organizations in different capacities. He is the editor of the Journal of Human and Environmental Sciences, Managing Editor of Man and Life. Associate Editor, Journal of Indian Anthropological Society, Member, Editorial Board, Culture and Psychology. Dr. Raha has been elected as the President, Anthrolopogy and Archaeology Section of 83rd Indian Science Congress (1995-96)
ABOUT THE AUTHOR Prabodh Kumar Bhowmick
Prof. Prabhodh Kumar Bhowmick, M.Sc., Ph.D., D.Sc (b 1926) was the Professor of Anthropology, Calcutta University and is the founder of Institute of Social Research and Applied Anthropology, Samaj Sevak Sangha and many other organizations. He is also the founder of Bidisa. In 1942 he took part in Quite India Movement and was jailed by the Britishu Government. In 1971 he was elected as President, Anthropology and Archaeology, Section, Indian Science Congress. From 1984 to 1990 he acted as the Dean of Science, Calcutta University. He is attached to a large number of organizations and academic bodies. He has written a large number of books, and articles. He did a great service for the welfare of the tribal people of West Bengal, particularly the Lodha or West Bengal. At Bidisa he has established a residential school for the tribal students, particularly for the Lodha students. He is an eminent Anthropologist and has done a great job for the development and also spread of anthropology in different parts of India. He is the architect in starting anthropology in different colleges and universities.
